Today, OpenAI is hinting at a significant announcement, raising anticipation about its long-rumored web browser. A cryptic teaser featuring browser tabs appeared on OpenAI's X account, indicating that a livestream will unveil the details at 1PM ET / 10AM PT.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman mentioned that the announcement pertains to “a new product I’m quite excited about.”

In July, Reuters revealed that OpenAI was gearing up to launch an AI web browser, integrating the company’s Operator AI agent. This feature would enable Operator to make restaurant reservations, automatically fill forms, and execute various browser tasks.

The browser is anticipated to incorporate a ChatGPT interface, allowing users to engage directly with the chatbot through the browser, eliminating the need to visit the ChatGPT website. It's also expected to run on Chromium, the same engine supporting Chrome, Microsoft Edge, and Opera.

The competition in the AI browser space is intensifying. Google's Chrome features Gemini, Perplexity has introduced its Comet AI browser, The Browser Company was acquired by Atlassian for $610 million earlier this year, and Microsoft has been developing an AI-powered Copilot Mode in its Edge browser. These browsers now face a new contender with OpenAI’s specialized product.

Microsoft, the strategic AI partner of OpenAI, has opted not to develop a dedicated AI browser. Instead, Mustafa Suleyman, Microsoft AI CEO, mentioned last month that Microsoft's strategy involves evolving the Edge browser into “a true agentic browser,” rather than launching a revamped AI web browser like The Browser Company's Dia.
