On November 12, a controversial incident emerged when renowned car reviewer Chen Zhen recreated the "Rolls-Royce Spectre accident" scenario while test-driving the XPeng X9 at a testing ground. Critics accused the demonstration of disrespect toward the victims and their families.
In a video released by Chen, he showcased the XPeng X9 in a controlled testing environment with Lane Centering Control (LCC) activated. He set the vehicle’s speed to 80 km/h and later 100 km/h, deliberately simulating a collision with a stationary oncoming car. The footage showed that the XPeng X9 accurately detected the obstacle and braked in time before impact. Chen asserted that if any Chinese-branded vehicle with driver-assist features had been involved in the original "Spectre accident," the outcome would have been avoided.
However, netizens and bloggers criticized both Chen and XPeng for the stunt, arguing it was insensitive to those affected by the original accident. XPeng has yet to issue an official response.
An XPeng employee, @xp-小宇宙, addressed the controversy on Weibo, explaining that the test occurred during a closed-door event where nearly 20 media representatives participated in XPeng X9’s "extreme all-scenario tire blowout test." Chen proposed recreating the Spectre scenario to verify the X9’s safety performance under identical conditions. "Having completed our scheduled tests, we were happy to assist. We will continue supporting such safety demonstrations to highlight Chinese automakers’ leadership in vehicle safety," the employee stated.
