Semiconductor packaging and testing service provider Amkor Technology reported record second-quarter financial results after the market close on Monday, with revenue and earnings significantly surpassing Wall Street expectations. However, the company's shares experienced a sharp decline of over 24% during Tuesday's trading session.

According to the financial report, Amkor Technology achieved net sales of $1.9 billion in the second quarter, a 26% year-over-year increase, marking an all-time high. Net income reached $174 million, or $0.70 per share, well above the analyst consensus estimate of $0.48 per share. Gross margin improved substantially from 14.2% in the previous quarter to 16.8%, primarily driven by higher factory utilization rates and a more favorable product mix. The company's CEO noted that both the computing segment and the automotive and industrial end markets posted record quarterly revenues.

Despite these strong results, the market's reaction was a sell-off. Analysts pointed to the company's disappointing third-quarter guidance as the direct cause of the stock's decline. Amkor Technology forecast third-quarter revenue of approximately $2.0 billion (within a guidance range of $1.95 billion to $2.05 billion), falling short of the general Wall Street expectation of around $2.1 billion. Furthermore, the company anticipates a high single-digit sequential decline in its communications business revenue for the third quarter, deviating from normal seasonal patterns. This is attributed to factors such as reduced Android-related revenue due to high-bandwidth memory supply bottlenecks, changes in customer production schedules, and temporary disruptions from the relocation of system-in-package operations to a factory in Vietnam.

While the near-term outlook disappointed investors, multiple research firms indicated that Amkor Technology's long-term growth narrative remains intact. Earlier this year, the company signed a multi-year strategic partnership with Nvidia and received a $1.5 billion prepayment to support its advanced packaging capacity expansion in the United States. Additionally, it entered into a 10-year collaboration agreement with TSMC. These partnerships solidify its crucial position in the AI infrastructure supply chain. The company continues to uphold its capital expenditure plan of $2.5 billion to $3.0 billion for 2026, allocated for advanced packaging capacity expansion, including the Arizona campus.
