Shanghai Port Sets New Global Benchmark in Green Shipping With Record 8,016-Ton Bio-Methanol Bunkering Operation

On August 15-16, 2026, Shanghai Port once again etched its name into the annals of global green shipping history. SIPG Energy, a subsidiary of Shanghai International Port (Group) Co., Ltd., in collaboration with CMA CGM and Shanghai Electric, successfully completed a bunkering operation of 8,016 tonnes of domestically-produced bio-methanol for the 13,000 TEU methanol dual-fuel container vessel "CMA CGM OSMIM".

This single operation not only set a new record for the largest single bio-methanol bunkering at a Chinese port, but also surpassed the previous global record of 3,643 tonnes set in March of this year by the same team for CMA CGM's world-first bio-methanol vessel. It marks another significant milestone in the deepening green shipping collaboration between SIPG, CMA CGM, and Shanghai Electric, showcasing Shanghai Port's capability in large-scale bio-methanol supply and bunkering services while providing a new practical model for the scaled application of green marine fuels.

On August 17, a bio-methanol bunkering ceremony was held at SIPG's Yangshan Port area, bringing together key partners to jointly witness and celebrate this important milestone in low-carbon shipping development. The bunkering operation broke the record for single-vessel bio-methanol refueling at Chinese ports and set a new global high, underscoring the comprehensive upgrade of Shanghai Port's green fuel bunkering service capabilities and demonstrating that through close coordination across the industry chain, large-scale application of alternative marine fuels is progressively becoming a reality.

Breakthrough Achievement: Scaled Bunkering Capability Takes a Leap Forward

During the bunkering operation, SIPG fully leveraged its strengths in port resource integration and coordinated dispatch, demonstrating professional bunkering service capabilities. The "Hai Gang Zhi Yuan" vessel, operated by SIPG Energy, safely and efficiently completed the ship-to-ship bunkering at Shanghai Port. With guidance and support from port authorities, multiple entities including the pilot station and Fuxing Company worked in close coordination, each fulfilling their respective duties. Detailed measures were implemented across operational planning, vessel movements, berthing arrangements, on-site supervision, and emergency response protocols. The collective efforts of all parties not only rewrote the bunkering volume record but also significantly enhanced operational efficiency.

Notably, the majority of the bio-methanol used in this bunkering operation came from Shanghai Electric's Taonan project in Jilin Province. The fuel was transported overland from Taonan to Dalian for consolidation, then shipped by sea to Shanghai for storage, and finally bunkered onto the vessel at Shanghai Port. This successfully established a cross-regional supply chain corridor spanning "Jilin Production - Dalian Transshipment - Shanghai Bunkering", validating Shanghai Port's capability in large-scale bio-methanol resource organization, supply assurance, and bunkering operations.

Whole-Chain Collaboration: Building a New Framework for Green Shipping Transformation

This bunkering operation represents a significant outcome of the deepened cooperation between SIPG, CMA CGM, and Shanghai Electric in bio-methanol. In March 2025, the three parties formally signed a long-term bio-methanol supply and cooperation agreement, strengthening coordination across resource supply, transportation assurance, port bunkering, and end-use applications to jointly build a comprehensive bio-methanol industry chain system.

The three parties complement each other through their respective core strengths. CMA CGM, with its global shipping network and low-carbon fleet deployment, provides stable end-use application scenarios and market demand. Shanghai Electric, deeply engaged in the bio-methanol industry, strengthens the foundation for green fuel production and supply. SIPG, leveraging its core port resources and mature service systems, breaks through barriers across fuel transportation, storage, and terminal bunkering processes. From the "first order" record at the beginning of the year to this scaled bunkering operation, the three parties have each demonstrated their strengths, with cooperation outcomes progressing in layers and continuously upgrading.

Looking Ahead: Leading the Global Green Shipping Revolution

Taking this record as a new starting point, the three parties will continue to deepen comprehensive and multi-layered cooperation in the green shipping sector. SIPG Energy will anchor itself to three major development goals and focus on building three core capabilities, continuously iterating and upgrading its green fuel supply assurance and scaled bunkering capabilities. In partnership with industry chain collaborators, it will continue to refine the bio-methanol supply chain system, promote the normalization, scaling, and high-quality development of green marine fuel services, and continue to lead the global shipping industry's green and low-carbon transformation.
