Marvell Technology (MRVL) shares plummeted 5.51% during intraday trading on Wednesday, extending a multi-day decline as the semiconductor sector faced broad-based selling pressure. The drop comes amid mounting concerns over the returns on AI infrastructure investments and a sector-wide technical correction.

The selloff was triggered by a combination of headwinds. Corning's disappointing third-quarter revenue guidance sparked a chain reaction across optical and data-infrastructure stocks, directly impacting Marvell given its significant exposure to electro-optical products and data-center interconnect solutions. Additionally, the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index has retreated nearly 20% from its all-time high, approaching bear market territory, with peers including Micron Technology, AMD, and NVIDIA all trading lower.

Further pressure stemmed from a momentum-trading strategy unwind that has been weighing on retail-heavy tech names since July. Retail-focused tech stock baskets have fallen over 25% from their June peaks, with sector-wide selling showing no signs of abating. Broader concerns over Chinese competition, highlighted by the IPO of memory-chip maker CXMT, and doubts about the sustainability of massive AI data-center capital expenditures have compounded the negative sentiment across the semiconductor space.
