Data released recently by the Guangzhou survey team of the National Bureau of Statistics showed that the city's Consumer Price Index (CPI) remained flat month-on-month in August, while rising 1.2% from a year earlier. For the January-August period, Guangzhou's CPI registered a 1.2% increase compared with the same timeframe last year.

Looking at the major categories on a month-on-month basis, food prices dipped 0.8%, while non-food items edged up 0.1%. Prices for consumer goods and services both held steady from the prior month. Transportation and communication costs climbed 1.2%, with gasoline prices surging 7.2% amid fluctuations in international crude oil prices. Meanwhile, mobile phone prices advanced 3.3%, driven by higher costs for components such as chips and storage devices.

Prices within the food, tobacco, alcohol, and dining-out segment slipped 0.5%. Fresh fruit prices tumbled 8.0% as a result of a seasonal surge in supply during the summer months. Conversely, fresh vegetable prices rose 2.8%, as typhoons and heavy rainfall disrupted cultivation, transportation, and storage to varying degrees.
