Summer Reading Boom: Diverse Demands Reshape China's Book Market

Summer is the perfect season for learning, self-improvement, and recharging one's batteries. Recent book sales data reveals the underlying dynamics currently shaping the market. Among total book sales, primary and secondary school teaching materials dominate with a 45.2% share, followed by children's books at 13.6%, together accounting for nearly 60% of the market—proving that "exam preparation" and "parenting" remain the twin pillars of book consumption. However, it is equally noteworthy that leisure and entertainment books saw a year-on-year sales increase of 3.4 times, with board games, puzzles, and casual game books growing over 10 times, while AI learning and application titles surged by 8.1 times. Beyond the demand for academic aids, there remains considerable untapped market potential for interest-based entertainment and cutting-edge knowledge books.

The rigid demand for books driven by academic advancement remains strong. Primary and secondary school teaching materials hold the top spot with a 45.2% sales share. Segment data shows that reference tools for primary and secondary students grew by 140.2%, and study method and exam guide books increased by 122.4%, both far exceeding the average growth rate for the teaching aid category. Parents and students are placing greater emphasis on cultivating effective study methods rather than relying solely on a "brute-force approach to exercises," pursuing not just "learning more" but "learning smarter."

In the children's book segment, children's literature leads with a 40.6% sales share, while science and encyclopedia titles account for 16.2%. The fastest-growing subcategories are interactive audio books and sets, children's English, and intellectual development books. A new generation of parents maintains steady demand for traditional children's titles while simultaneously showing a stronger preference for interactive and thought-provoking content.

While the growth in exam-prep and parenting book consumption was expected, the 3.4-fold overall surge in leisure and entertainment books signals a notable emerging trend. Within this category, board games, puzzles, and casual game books lead overwhelmingly with a 73.2% sales share. In parallel, suspense and thriller novels grew by 94.9%, while Hong Kong and Taiwan comics and picture books increased by 207.3%. These categories are not "essential needs," yet their rapid growth demonstrates that in an era of digital screens and declining print readership, reading retains its value as a form of "slow entertainment." The market clearly still has room to grow in unlocking the entertainment potential of print publications.

The sales data for AI-related books also deserves close attention. Artificial intelligence titles lead with a 64.8% sales share, followed by AI and the intelligent economy at 19.7%, and wealth enhancement through AI at 8.5%. In terms of sales growth, AI learning and application books surged 8.1 times, AI intelligent digital management rose 191.3%, and AI art creation grew 101.5%. The wave of AI learning has extended into traditional print reading, with public attitudes toward AI shifting from "what is this?" to "how do I use it?"

Geographically, provinces such as Zhejiang, Shanghai, Guizhou, and Beijing show higher interest in AI books. While the eastern region dominates with a 63.5% sales share, western provinces including Guizhou and Gansu also demonstrate significant attention to AI titles. The gap in willingness to "embrace new technology" between eastern and western regions is narrowing.

Examining this summer's book consumption data, it becomes clear that the demand side of the book market has already pivoted, with the three core needs of "academic essentials plus interest entertainment plus knowledge upgrading" beginning to take shape. In response to this shift, the publishing industry on the supply side must answer key questions: How can it deliver more high-quality leisure and entertainment reads to satisfy the growing demand for "pleasure reading"? How can it accelerate the popularization and contextualization of cutting-edge knowledge to reach a broader audience of ordinary readers? And how can it develop precisely tailored content products for different regions and age groups? Only by grasping the pulse of the times behind these numbers can the book market truly achieve its own remarkable transformation.
