Shares of the Roundhill Memory ETF (DRAM) surged 8.81% during Thursday's regular trading session, fueled by a powerful rally in the memory chip sector. The move came as investors reacted to blowout quarterly results from industry giant Samsung Electronics and fresh industry forecasts indicating a prolonged supply crunch for DRAM chips.

The primary catalyst for the surge was Samsung Electronics' second-quarter earnings report. The company posted a record net profit of 71.63 trillion won, with its semiconductor division's operating profit skyrocketing more than 18-fold year-over-year. Samsung attributed the stellar performance to insatiable demand for memory products driven by the artificial intelligence boom. The company further projected that the global memory chip shortage will persist until 2028 and announced plans to lock in 60% to 70% of its total DRAM and NAND production capacity through five-year contracts.

Adding to the bullish sentiment, a report from TrendForce reinforced the outlook for a tight DRAM market, noting that high-bandwidth memory (HBM) production is heavily crowding out capacity for conventional DRAM. The firm expects the supply shortage to persist through 2027, as new fabrication plants won't meaningfully boost output until 2028. This combination of record-breaking earnings and a tightening supply-demand outlook provided a powerful tailwind for the Roundhill Memory ETF, which tracks companies across the memory chip ecosystem.
