The Russian Investigative Committee has launched a criminal investigation into a gruesome murder case involving Russian cryptocurrency millionaire Roman Novak and his wife Anna, who mysteriously disappeared in early October.

According to the latest reports on November 9, the couple's dismembered and buried bodies were discovered in a desert near Dubai on October 3. The suspects are believed to be Russian citizens.

The couple was allegedly lured to a rented villa under the pretext of an "investment meeting." There, they were ambushed and held captive. Investigators have identified two possible motives: either the kidnappers demanded a "large ransom," which was never paid, or the victims were killed after failing to provide access to their cryptocurrency funds.

Russian investigator Svetlana Petrenko revealed that the perpetrators had accomplices who helped organize the kidnapping by renting vehicles and a location to detain the victims. After the murder, the killers disposed of the weapons and the couple's personal belongings across different emirates.

Eight Russian nationals are suspected of involvement, including three organizers and five hired intermediaries. Authorities tracked the suspects using surveillance footage and phone signals, which showed the couple's phones briefly appearing in Hatta and Oman before vanishing entirely on October 4.

So far, seven suspects have been detained in Russia, with cooperation from UAE authorities. Some reports suggest the accused may be extradited to St. Petersburg for trial. Four of the five intermediaries might be released this week, as evidence suggests they were unaware of the crime, believing they were arranging a legitimate investment meeting.

The victim, Roman Novak, was a controversial figure in Russia's crypto circles. Known for flaunting a lavish lifestyle on social media, he had a criminal record—having been sentenced to six years in prison in 2020 for defrauding partners in investment and crypto schemes. Released early in 2023, he relocated abroad and continued soliciting investments under new ventures. At the time of his disappearance, he was under investigation for allegedly embezzling over £380 million (approx. RMB 3.68 billion) from investors under the guise of business development.

The couple leaves behind two young children, who are reportedly being cared for by Anna's father and stepmother, who flew to Dubai to retrieve them.
