FedEx Shares Plunge Over 6% Despite Q4 Earnings Beat, Pressured by Costs and Macro Headwinds

Shares of FedEx (FDX.US) tumbled in after-hours trading following its latest earnings report, as concerns over cost pressures and a cautious outlook overshadowed quarterly profit that exceeded market expectations.

For the fiscal fourth quarter ended May 31, the company reported adjusted earnings per share of $6.31, surpassing the average analyst estimate of $5.96. Revenue rose 12.6% year-over-year to $25 billion, also beating expectations of $24.04 billion.

Profitability Under Pressure

However, the positive earnings figures were overshadowed by significant margin compression. The operating margin for the core FedEx Express segment declined to 7.7% from 8.4% a year earlier. The company cited rising costs for employee compensation and benefits, outsourced transportation, and fuel, alongside the grounding of its MD-11 freighter fleet, as major headwinds. The overall corporate margin fell to 8.4%, below analyst forecasts. Chief Financial Officer Claude Russ explained that margins are expected to improve as compensation-related burdens ease.

Navigating Macroeconomic Challenges

As a bellwether for the global economy, FedEx is contending with multiple macro challenges. CEO Raj Subramaniam noted that persistent shifts in global trade policy are creating significant operational headwinds. Tariff policies and the U.S. elimination of "de minimis" duty-free treatment for low-value e-commerce packages from retailers like Shein and Temu have weighed on shipment volumes. Ongoing geopolitical conflicts are also contributing to trade flow volatility. Chief Customer Officer Brie Carere stated the company will begin returning tariff refunds to customers starting in August.

Future Guidance and Strategic Focus

Looking ahead, FedEx has aligned its fiscal year with the calendar year and provided new guidance excluding its recently spun-off freight business. It forecasts adjusted EPS of $16.90 to $18.10 for 2026, up from a projected $15 for 2025, and expects revenue growth of 11% in the new fiscal year. Analysts noted the new profit target is slightly below market expectations, giving management room to potentially raise guidance later. The company also anticipates costs will increase by approximately $2.6 billion in 2026 compared to 2025, driven by wage hikes, higher purchased transportation costs, and other inflation-related expenses.

To combat rising costs and uneven demand, FedEx is focusing on improving profitability by prioritizing high-return segments such as healthcare, aerospace, heavy freight, luxury goods, and cross-border transportation. The company also announced a new share repurchase program of up to $1 billion for 2026.

Post-Spin Off Landscape and Competition

Earlier this month, FedEx completed the spin-off of its freight unit to create a "purer, more focused" parcel business. FedEx Freight Holding Co. (FDXF.US) began trading independently on June 1, entering the market as one of North America's largest freight carriers during a fragile recovery from a prolonged freight recession. Its shares have been volatile, and it is set to report its first independent quarterly results soon.

Meanwhile, FedEx and its peers face increasing competitive pressure from Amazon.com Inc's (AMZN.US) planned expansion of its logistics business, which analysts at Morgan Stanley have suggested could be a "watershed moment" for the industry.

Following the earnings release, FedEx shares fell more than 6% in extended trading, indicating the results failed to meet investor expectations after a strong rally earlier in the year. The stock had gained approximately 36% year-to-date through Tuesday's close, significantly outperforming the S&P 500's 7.6% gain.
