NIO Recalls 240,000 Vehicles Due to Potential Instrument Panel and Center Screen Blackout

According to the recall center of the State Administration for Market Regulation, Shanghai-based NIO Inc. has submitted a recall plan to the authority, in compliance with regulations concerning the recall of defective automotive products.

The recall affects a total of 246,229 ES8, ES6, and EC6 pure electric vehicles manufactured between March 16, 2018, and January 16, 2023.

The reason for the recall is a software issue in these vehicles that may cause temporary black screens on the instrument panel and center display under certain conditions. During these blackouts, essential vehicle information and functions—such as speed indicators, fault warnings, and defrosting or defogging features—may become unavailable to the driver, posing a potential safety risk.

NIO will address the issue by offering free over-the-air software updates to affected vehicles, upgrading them to Aspen 3.5.6, Alder 2.1.0, or later versions. For vehicles that cannot be updated via OTA technology, NIO service centers will contact owners to arrange recall services to eliminate the safety concern.
