US Senate Vote on Cryptocurrency Bill Pushed to September, Midterm Elections Threaten Progress

The US cryptocurrency industry's hopes for landmark digital asset legislation are fading, as a key vote in the Senate has been postponed, despite Republican promises to advance the bill after lawmakers return to Capitol Hill next month. The Senate's departure for a five-week August recess on Saturday without a vote on the highly anticipated legislation represents a significant setback for the crypto sector.

The well-funded cryptocurrency industry has invested hundreds of millions of dollars in lobbying efforts to push the bill forward, arguing it would establish a solid legal foundation for crypto businesses. However, Democrats, some Republicans, and other critics contend that the legislation lacks sufficient safeguards against money laundering and ethical concerns.

The bill requires a 60-vote threshold to advance, but ongoing opposition from key Democratic senators, combined with gridlock on other Senate business, has stalled progress. Senate Majority Leader John Thune, a Republican, pushed for a procedural vote on Saturday, which could lead to the bill being brought before the full Senate as early as September. Yet, many analysts and lobbyists are skeptical about the bill's prospects, as the November midterm elections will divert lawmakers' attention and shorten the Senate's session, leaving little time to resolve differences amid a packed agenda.
