Yunnan's Dehong Prefecture Governor Wei Gang Voluntarily Surrenders to Authorities for Investigation

On January 3, 2026, the Yunnan Provincial Commission for Discipline Inspection and Supervision announced that Wei Gang, Deputy Secretary of the Dehong Prefecture Committee and Governor of Dehong Prefecture in Yunnan Province, is suspected of serious violations of discipline and law, and has voluntarily surrendered to the authorities. He is currently undergoing disciplinary review and supervisory investigation by the Yunnan Provincial Commission for Discipline Inspection and Supervision. At the time of this announcement, Wei Gang had served as the Governor of Dehong Prefecture for over eight years.

Public records indicate that Wei Gang is male, of Dai ethnicity, born in January 1969, holds a university degree, is a member of the Communist Party of China, and began working in August 1989. His career has included positions such as Vice Mayor of Ruili City, Standing Committee Member and Secretary of the Political and Legal Affairs Committee of the Ruili Municipal Committee, Deputy Secretary and Secretary of the Political and Legal Affairs Committee of the Ruili Municipal Committee, Deputy Secretary of the Ruili Municipal Committee, Deputy Secretary of the Yingjiang County Committee and County Mayor, and Party Committee Secretary of Dehong Normal College.

In October 2017, Wei Gang assumed the new roles of Deputy Secretary of the Dehong Prefecture Committee and Acting Governor, and was later appointed as the full Governor. Dehong Dai and Jingpo Autonomous Prefecture is located in western Yunnan Province, administering 5 counties and cities, with a permanent resident population of 1.337 million in 2024. The prefecture is home to over 40 ethnic minorities, primarily five indigenous groups: the Dai, Jingpo, Achang, Lisu, and De'ang, with a total minority population of 627,600.

Four of the prefecture's counties and cities are situated along the border, featuring five national ports—Wanding, Ruili, Mangshi Airport, Zhangfeng, and Yingjiang—and 20 passenger and freight transport channels.
