SpaceX Faces First Major Post-IPO Test with Rescheduled Starship Launch

SpaceX is preparing for another attempt to launch its Starship vehicle on Thursday local time, marking the first restart after an engine failure forced a last-minute cancellation last week and the company's first major technical challenge since its initial public offering. As the core platform supporting future Starlink expansion, NASA's lunar missions, and Mars strategy, every Starship test flight is directly tied to the credibility of SpaceX's long-term growth narrative.

This launch is not only the second flight of the third-generation Starship (V3) but also the first time capital markets have scrutinized SpaceX's research and development model since its IPO. After the launch was aborted last week, the company's stock fell for two consecutive days, with its market capitalization retreating significantly from its post-IPO peak, indicating that investors are beginning to reassess the Starship development timeline and commercialization progress.

According to plans, this mission will continue to validate key capabilities of the third-generation Starship, including in-orbit engine restarts, Starlink satellite deployment, and spacecraft flight control. A successful test would help restore market confidence and lay the groundwork for subsequent orbital flights, in-orbit refueling, and crewed missions.

Launch Delayed Due to Engine Failure, First Major Technical Test Since IPO

The launch is scheduled for 5:45 PM local time on Thursday (early morning of July 24 Beijing time) at the Starbase launch site in southern Texas, executing the second flight test of the third-generation Starship (V3).

The initial attempt, scheduled for last Thursday, was canceled at the last moment before ignition. At the time, thick smoke suddenly rose around the launch tower, but the rocket remained on the pad. Elon Musk later stated on the X platform that two Raptor engines failed to ignite, and the system automatically triggered an abort sequence. The company will replace the engines before rescheduling the launch.

While launch aborts are not uncommon in aerospace testing, the market's reaction has been notably more sensitive because it occurred shortly after SpaceX completed its approximately $86 billion IPO. Following the news, the company's stock fell about 3% in after-hours trading and continued to decline the next trading day, cumulatively retreating from its high point on the third day of trading, with its market capitalization shedding over $1 trillion.

Ivan Feinseth, Chief Investment Officer at Tigress Financial Partners, stated that this launch delay serves as a reminder to investors that there remains significant execution risk for Starship to achieve high-frequency, fully reusable operations. If testing progress continues to be delayed, the pace of future revenue realization and margin improvement could also be affected.

However, some industry insiders believe the market reaction is overblown. Caleb Henry, Research Director at consulting firm Quilty Space, noted that SpaceX has long adhered to a "test fast, fail fast, iterate fast" development model. The Falcon 9 also experienced multiple failures early on before eventually becoming one of the highest-frequency and most reliable commercial rockets globally.

Starship Determines the Ceiling of SpaceX's Future Valuation

Compared to the mature commercial launch business of Falcon 9, Starship is the core of SpaceX's future growth story.

Musk aims to use Starship to launch the next generation of Starlink satellites and further expand into businesses such as space data centers, deep-space transportation, crewed lunar landings, and Mars exploration. As these plans advance, Starship is also seen as a key platform determining SpaceX's long-term commercial value and profitability.

To date, SpaceX has invested over $15 billion in Starship development and holds approximately $4 billion in NASA contracts, with plans to execute the Artemis lunar mission as early as 2028.

However, to reach this goal, the company still needs to overcome a series of key technologies, including in-orbit propellant transfer, completing more than a dozen consecutive resupply launches, and achieving crewed flight certification. So far, Starship has not completed a single full orbital flight.

More importantly, Starship is designed to be the world's first fully reusable super-heavy launch vehicle system—both the Super Heavy booster and the spacecraft itself need to return safely and be reused after each launch. If this goal is ultimately achieved, it will significantly reduce launch costs and become the core competitive advantage for SpaceX to maintain its leading position in commercial spaceflight, the Starlink network, and deep-space exploration.
