Stronger Economic Surveys Reshape Gold Pricing Dynamics

Deep News
09/24

On September 24, the September business survey delivered fresh interest rate clues to the gold market.

According to a September 23 report, the preliminary US composite purchasing managers' index rose to 58.4, up from 56 in the prior month.

Services and manufacturing improved in tandem, and spot gold briefly fell to around $4,280 per ounce after the data was released.

The survey not only pointed to output growth but also reflected backlog orders, hiring demand and cost pressures.

When economic activity runs stronger than expected, the market may reassess how long financing conditions will stay relatively tight, and because gold generates no interest income, it faces a higher relative cost of holding, so short-term moves are easily dominated by rate expectations.

For the market, the gap between expectations and actual readings often triggers trading more than the absolute level does, so it is necessary to distinguish between the data itself strengthening and prior pricing having been overly cautious.

Price sub-components and the headline index need to be read together.

More orders may strengthen companies' bargaining power, and rising input costs may gradually pass through to selling prices, but survey data are not actual inflation outcomes.

Preliminary readings cover incomplete information, and a single reading cannot be used to directly project the future policy path, let alone treat synchronized moves as the only causal link.

Looking ahead, whether employment, price and consumption data corroborate this survey will determine the durability of the repricing.

If growth is strong while cost pressures ease, the impact on gold may differ from a scenario in which growth and prices rise together.

Distinguishing these two combinations helps explain why the gold price does not always move in line with the pace of economic activity.
