Gold Prices Stagnate Ahead of Fed Decision; Market Tension Rises

International gold markets saw a slight uptick on Wednesday, August 9th, though the precious metal remained under pressure during Asian trading hours, hovering near the $4,040 per ounce mark.

Prices experienced a sharp decline on Tuesday amid heightened market speculation that the Federal Reserve could spring an interest rate hike this week. All attention is now locked on the central bank's impending monetary policy decision.

While the prevailing consensus suggests the Fed will hold rates steady at this meeting, investors are closely watching the policy statement for clues on inflation, employment outlook, and the future interest rate path.

According to the interest rate swap market, the probability of a 25-basis-point rate hike is currently around one-third. Following the established market patterns of recent years, such a high level of uncertainty so close to a rate decision is rare.

From a daily chart perspective, gold's upward momentum appears to be fading. The 5-day moving average is approaching a bearish crossover, and short-term moving averages are trending lower, creating significant overhead resistance for prices. Currently, gold remains persistently pressured below these key averages, indicating a lack of short-term recovery strength and substantial resistance above.

On the 4-hour chart, prices are exhibiting a weak, oscillating structure. The MACD indicator shows signs of a correction, short-term averages are pointing lower, and the RSI is hovering near the neutral zone. This suggests a temporary balance between bullish and bearish forces.

Overall, the recommended approach for gold trading is to adopt a bearish bias within a fluctuating market.
