General Motors to Launch Multiple New Gas-Powered Cadillac Models Amid EV Strategy Pullback

General Motors will introduce several new gasoline-powered Cadillac models starting next spring, as the automaker continues to refine its strategy and slow its full electrification push.

CEO Mary Barra stated on Tuesday that the next-generation Cadillac lineup will include a refreshed CT5 sedan, an updated version of the aging XT5 midsize SUV, and the previously discontinued three-row XT6 SUV.

Barra made the announcement during the company's second-quarter earnings call, saying, "Starting next spring and through 2028, we will be launching the next generation of Cadillac internal combustion engine vehicles." She noted these new gas-powered vehicles will expand the product offering alongside Cadillac's existing all-electric crossovers and the upcoming electric Escalade SUV.

This new product plan further confirms General Motors' strategy of scaling back its electric vehicle business. The company had previously planned for Cadillac to transition to an all-electric brand by the end of this decade. Now, GM is not only adjusting Cadillac's electrification goals but also scaling back EV rollout plans for its other brands while expanding production capacity for internal combustion engines, including V8 engines.

Influenced by slower-than-expected EV market adoption and adjustments to U.S. regulatory policies—such as relaxed emissions standards and the removal of several electric vehicle incentives—GM has incurred $10.9 billion in EV-related impairment charges since the second half of last year.

Barra reiterated that GM plans to initiate a large-scale manufacturing reshoring effort starting next year. One key initiative involves expanding production of full-size SUVs at a Michigan plant originally intended for electric vehicle manufacturing.

Currently, full-size SUVs such as the Escalade, Chevrolet Tahoe, Chevrolet Suburban, GMC Yukon, and Yukon XL are all produced at GM's Arlington Assembly plant in Texas.
