Chipmaker AMD to Raise Prices Across Entire Product Range by 10% Amid Rising Foundry Costs

Shares of Advanced Micro Devices (AMD.US) edged nearly 2% higher in pre-market trading on Friday, extending a three-session winning streak, following unverified reports that the chipmaker has notified customers of a 10% price increase across its entire product lineup starting in the fourth quarter.

The price hike is reportedly linked to rising manufacturing costs at Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing (TSM.US), which fabricates the vast majority of AMD's chips. TSMC has reportedly informed clients of approximately a 10% increase in wafer foundry quotes as its own production costs continue to climb. With wafer cost increases directly squeezing product gross margins, AMD has opted to pass the cost pressure downstream to customers.

According to the reports, AMD's price increase will span multiple product categories, including AI accelerator chips, consumer graphics processing units (GPUs), and motherboard chipsets. While the reports did not explicitly mention AMD's Ryzen CPUs, those processors are also heavily reliant on TSMC's foundry services, suggesting the price increase may extend to consumer-grade processors as well.

Notably, earlier reports this month indicated that Intel (INTC.US) plans to raise PC CPU prices by approximately 10% again on October 5, 2026. This would mark Intel's third round of price increases since late 2025, following a roughly 10% hike in the first quarter of 2026 and another increase in July that affected select consumer and server CPUs, with price adjustments ranging from tens of dollars to over a thousand dollars.

Supply chain sources indicate that the direct drivers of Intel's sustained price increases are rising costs across the entire supply chain and persistently strong demand for certain products. Key components such as memory and PCB laminates have seen notable price escalations, significantly compressing profit margins throughout the PC supply chain. Despite industry expectations of a modest global PC market downturn in 2027, Intel's counter-cyclical price increases signal a strategic shift from "volume-for-market-share" to "margin-over-volume," which could support a recovery in its PC CPU business profitability.
