IMF Chief Warns World Remains Unprepared for Unrelenting Series of Shocks

International Monetary Fund Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva has stated that following a succession of recent crises, the world must build a foundation resilient to increasingly frequent shocks.

"I worry that we have not fully accepted that this is the world going forward," Georgieva said during a podcast appearance. "We are not going to be shock-free."

Since taking the helm of the Washington-based IMF in 2019, Georgieva has navigated the COVID-19 pandemic, the Russia-Ukraine conflict, trade tariff disputes, and now conflict in the Middle East. As she noted, her role involves rallying the institution's 191 member countries to collaborate for the broader health of the global economy.

"Our most powerful weapon is objective analysis," she said.

The breakneck development of artificial intelligence and its impact on labor markets and economies is driving a major transformation. Georgieva indicated that many institutions, including the IMF, failed to fully recognize the inequality stemming from globalization, and she aims to ensure AI does not lead to a similar outcome.

The IMF is scheduled to release its latest World Economic Outlook in July, having already downgraded its growth forecast for this year in April due to the impact of the Middle East conflict.
