Nikkei 225 Undergoes Major Reshuffle: Gaming and Semiconductor Heavyweights In, Traditional Manufacturing Giants Out

Japan's premier stock benchmark is set for a significant transformation, with the inclusion of high-growth tech and gaming names replacing legacy manufacturing firms. This quarterly adjustment reflects the evolving landscape of the Japanese economy, prioritizing sectors with strong momentum in artificial intelligence and semiconductors.

In a statement released on Friday, Nikkei Inc. confirmed that game developer Capcom Co., chip equipment maker Kokusai Electric Corp, and semiconductor materials firm JX Advanced Metals Corp will officially join the Nikkei 225 index starting October 1st. Concurrently, truck manufacturer Archion Corp, office equipment giant Konica Minolta Inc., and environmental engineering company Kanadevia Corp. will be removed from the benchmark as part of this periodic review.

Nikkei noted that the selection of Capcom, globally renowned for its "Resident Evil" and "Monster Hunter" franchises, was aimed at ensuring a balanced representation of industrial sectors within the index. In contrast, the addition of Kokusai Electric and JX Advanced Metals was primarily driven by considerations of market liquidity. This reshuffle of constituents is expected to have a direct impact on the relevant stocks, as passive funds tracking the index will adjust their portfolios accordingly, potentially triggering price movements.

So far this year, the tech-heavy Nikkei 225 has surged approximately 29%, fueled by robust performance in chip-related stocks amid the global artificial intelligence boom. In Tokyo trading on Friday, the index closed up 1.3%. The Nikkei 225 undergoes semi-annual reviews in March and September, designed to adapt to changing market conditions and maintain the index's representativeness. Selection criteria rely on two main pillars: market liquidity, where the top 450 stocks ranked by trading value and price volatility over the past five years enter a "high-liquidity pool," with the top 75 non-index names being added; and sector balance, which categorizes stocks into seven groups—technology, information & communication, finance, consumer, industrial materials, capital goods & other, and transportation & utilities—to ensure the number of constituents in each sector mirrors its overall market size.

Among the three companies being removed, Konica Minolta has faced persistent pressure in its digital camera and office equipment businesses, leading to a decline in both market capitalization and liquidity. Conversely, the newly added Capcom benefits from a revaluation of its gaming intellectual property and strong earnings growth, while Kokusai Electric and JX Advanced Metals have garnered significant market attention due to the boom in the semiconductor supply chain. This comprehensive "reshuffle" underscores the Nikkei's shifting tilt toward high-growth, technology-oriented manufacturing sectors.
