The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) has taken direct action to uphold safety standards in the automotive sector. On July 24, the Equipment Industry Division I of MIIT dispatched teams to GAC Aion New Energy Automobile Co., Ltd. and Zhaoqing XPeng New Energy Investment Co., Ltd. for inspections focused on product safety assurance and production consistency.
These inspections targeted the companies' capabilities in intelligent connected vehicle safety, design and development, and production consistency, verifying they maintain their production access conditions. Inspectors randomly selected sample vehicles and power batteries on-site, which were then sent to authorized institutions for compliance testing against national standards.
Just a week earlier, on July 17, the same MIIT division had convened a meeting with key automobile manufacturers. This meeting outlined critical tasks to regulate industry competition, improve production consistency and quality safety, and conduct thorough risk assessments and supervision of automotive product safety. The meeting explicitly urged automakers to reject irrational competition, enhance product testing verification and safety assessments, and firmly uphold the baseline of production consistency and quality safety.
Three primary requirements were established. First, companies must deeply investigate product safety risks by systematically identifying issues in production consistency, reliability, durability, and new technology testing—both within their own operations and among key component suppliers—and rectify them. This involves strengthening supply chain management and reinforcing production consistency assurance. Second, companies must bolster testing and verification during innovative product design, fully evaluate safety risks, and prudently deploy new technologies in vehicles. All products must meet national standards and ensure human health, personal, and property safety, with strict obligations to inform consumers truthfully, avoiding exaggeration or false advertising. Third, companies must enhance safety assessments for combined driving assistance and autonomous driving functions, fortifying capabilities in functional safety, expected functional safety, cybersecurity, data security, and software updates, while improving monitoring and response to safety incidents.
The meeting further emphasized that automakers must firmly adopt the principles of "safety first, quality above all." They bear the responsibility for ensuring product quality safety, protecting public safety, and safeguarding citizens' lives and property. Companies should implement risk prevention measures across design verification, manufacturing, and after-sales services to genuinely protect consumer rights.
The MIIT has stated it will continue to organize supervisory inspections on automotive and motorcycle manufacturers and their products. Any enterprises found with violations will be dealt with severely according to the law, resolutely holding the line on automotive product safety and effectively safeguarding consumer rights and interests.
