No Steering Wheel, No Pedals, No Mirrors: Tesla Unveils Its Latest Vehicle

On September 3, local time, Tesla Motors held a launch event in Texas, officially unveiling the production version of its Cybercab robotaxi and beginning service in designated areas. Media outlets suggest this release marks a significant breakthrough for Tesla Motors in the autonomous ride-hailing sector.

The Cybercab was first introduced as a concept vehicle during Tesla Motors' "We, Robot" event in October 2024. The first production unit rolled off the line at the Texas Gigafactory in February 2026, with full-scale manufacturing commencing in April. The journey from concept to production took roughly 18 months.

As the world's first mass-produced model built exclusively for driverless operations, the Cybercab eliminates steering wheels, pedals, and traditional mirrors from its design from the outset. The vehicle is operated entirely by Tesla Motors' autonomous driving software, with the cabin featuring only two bench-style seats and a central touchscreen. It relies on a pure vision-based technical approach, using cameras and other sensors to perceive surroundings, and is equipped with Tesla Motors Full Self-Driving (FSD) system.

Tesla Motors states the Cybercab is "designed to be the safest car on the road," claiming disruptive advancements in convenience, passenger entertainment, and fleet operational connectivity. The vehicle was developed from the ground up for driverless ride-hailing services, per Tesla Motors.

Where to begin with its key features

The Cybercab was engineered from day one for unmanned operations. Once parked, it activates wireless charging automatically, and upon completing the charge, it launches an automated cleaning sequence, reducing the need for manual plug-in and janitorial tasks to make energy replenishment and maintenance more seamlessly integrated into daily fleet use.

The cabin is also redesigned around passengers rather than drivers, featuring the largest 22-inch center screen Tesla Motors has ever installed. Passengers can control seats, climate, and doors through this display, and can log into entertainment features such as music accounts. Tesla Motors' robotaxi service will remember each passenger's individualized preferences and settings, so regardless of which vehicle they board, there is no need to re-login or readjust - the system automatically adapts upon entry.

CEO Elon Musk has described the cabin as a "super comfortable lounge on wheels with a great TV and excellent sound system." Official data from Tesla Motors indicates the model's estimated efficiency reaches 9.8 kilometers per kilowatt-hour, translating to roughly 10.2 kWh per 100 kilometers. When deployed in ride-hailing operations, the per-kilometer travel cost is only one-tenth the industry average, according to the company.

Media reports suggest the Cybercab's design philosophy is entirely driven by unit economics for fleet operations. Its smaller size, reduced weight, and lower-capacity battery significantly cut both raw material costs and per-vehicle manufacturing expenses.

A fresh approach to vehicle manufacturing

Musk has previously stated the Cybercab represents a complete rethink of "how to build a car," with future hopes of producing a vehicle every 10 seconds, or even 5 seconds, which he believes will be key to future profitability.

Media reports note that the vehicle has been tested in multiple U.S. cities in recent months, positioning it as a central component of Tesla Motors' strategy to transform from an electric vehicle manufacturer into a pioneer in artificial intelligence products.

However, some outlets also point out that despite eye-catching demonstrations, Tesla Motors has yet to clarify whether it has obtained full commercial operating regulatory approvals, or whether it fully complies with federal motor vehicle safety standards. The complete removal of steering wheels and pedals directly challenges existing safety regulations. The content provided here is for reference only and should not be construed as investment advice.
