BTIG Warns: Hot Inflation Fails to Lift Yields, and Falling Rates Alongside Nasdaq Could Be the Most Painful Trade

According to a Wednesday report from U.S. investment bank BTIG, the bond market exhibited a textbook "news failure" after inflation data came in hotter than expected, confirming that U.S. Treasury yields (SHY, TLT, IEF) have already reached a tactical top. This shift sets up a highly contrarian trap trade for the stock market: falling rates combined with a declining Nasdaq.

BTIG strategist Jonathan Krinsky quoted Mark Twain in a note to clients: "It ain't what you don't know that gets you into trouble. It's what you know for sure that just ain't so." The report noted that the 30-year Treasury yield initially jumped 8 basis points following the scorching CPI print, but then gave back nearly all of those gains, finishing up by less than 2 basis points. Against a backdrop where inflation data should have been bearish for bonds and pushed yields higher, the inability of yields to advance further is a textbook example of "news failure."

"The best clue for finding a trend inflection is a 'news failure,'" Krinsky wrote. "When A happens, you expect B; but when C occurs, pay attention."

Beyond the Consensus: The Real Pain Trade

The market widely assumes that lower yields are bullish for stocks. But Krinsky warns that the truly painful trade goes in the opposite direction: interest rates and tech stocks falling in tandem. If the "Magnificent Seven" ultimately decline alongside rates, it would add more credibility to his "Red October" call.

The report noted that market internals are already showing signs of stress: nearly 79% of volume on the New York Stock Exchange was concentrated in declining stocks. The deterioration in breadth indicators corroborates the judgment that yields have peaked.

For investors, this means the previous one-sided logic of "betting on rate cuts and buying tech stocks" may be giving way to a new combination: falling yields no longer equate to a rebound in risk appetite, but rather look more like a repricing of growth and earnings expectations.
