Gold's Bullish Momentum Fades as Price Pullback Sets the Stage for a Potential Turning Point

Gold encountered significant selling pressure on Tuesday, August 19, following Monday's session. Spot gold dropped 1.85% to settle at $4,334.65 per ounce, while New York December-delivery futures declined 1.2% to $4,420.6. The move was not extreme in magnitude, but it has cast a shadow over market sentiment.

The primary catalyst behind the decline was not a sudden deterioration in gold's fundamental outlook, but rather the sharp rise in U.S. Treasury yields, combined with energy-driven inflation concerns stemming from ongoing Middle East geopolitical tensions. These factors directly weighed on the non-yielding asset.

From a technical perspective, gold's attempt to push higher on Monday was met with swift rejection, leading to a rapid pullback and an overall weakening of the chart structure. After testing recent highs, prices succumbed to downside pressure, with bullish momentum continuing to fade. Profit-taking from elevated levels has capped any rebound attempts.

On the daily chart, a bearish engulfing candle has formed, and both the 5-day and 10-day moving averages have turned downward, creating overhead resistance. The immediate resistance zone has shifted lower to the $4,370 area, with the next key hurdle around the $4,400 level.

On the 4-hour timeframe, the technical setup remains bearish, with prices trading below short-term moving averages and hovering near the lower Bollinger Band after the failed rally. The critical support to watch now is last Friday's low at $4,310, which serves as a pivotal level for bulls and bears alike. A break below this level could open the door for a deeper decline toward the $4,260 region, or even lower to the $4,200 area, which aligns with the middle Bollinger Band.

The market now awaits further cues to determine whether gold can stabilize or extend its corrective phase.
