Indian-Linked LPG Carrier Attempts Passage Through Strait of Hormuz

A very large gas carrier (VLGC) linked to India and loaded with liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) is attempting to navigate out of the Strait of Hormuz.

According to vessel tracking data, the Marshall Islands-flagged vessel Sarv Shakti appeared to be heading north along the shipping lane on Saturday, passing by and transiting through the area near Iran's Larak Island and Qeshm Island, moving towards the Gulf of Oman. The ship is carrying approximately 45,000 tons of LPG, a fuel commonly used for cooking.

This VLGC has previously operated on routes between the Persian Gulf and Indian ports. Currently, the vessel's declared destination is India, and it has Indian crew members on board. This is a common safety measure adopted by ships since the onset of the Iran conflict.

A freight document indicates that Indian Oil Corporation is listed as the buyer of the cargo. Indian Oil Corporation has not responded to emails seeking comment.

Should the transit be successful, the Sarv Shakti would be the first Indian-linked tanker observed passing through the Strait of Hormuz since the United States imposed a weeks-long blockade on vessels associated with Iran. This vessel would also become one of the largest carriers to complete an outbound passage since the chaotic weekend last month when the Strait of Hormuz was briefly reopened before being swiftly closed again.
