Anthropic Launches Internal Drug Discovery Initiative and AI Research Platform, Focusing on Neglected Diseases

Artificial intelligence firm Anthropic has officially announced the launch of an internal drug discovery project and simultaneously introduced Claude Science, an AI workbench designed for scientific researchers, marking its entry as the latest tech giant to bet on the healthcare sector.

During a presentation in San Francisco, Eric Kauderer-Abrams, head of life sciences at Anthropic, stated that the company's internal drug discovery initiative will concentrate on neglected diseases—areas traditionally overlooked by biopharmaceutical companies due to poor commercial returns. He emphasized that to build the correct models, products, and tools to accelerate industry progress, one must experience the process firsthand; nothing can replace the experience of working alongside teams on the front lines of drug development.

Anthropic's move is not merely a foray into pharmaceuticals. Company leadership positions the in-house drug project as a method to forge closer collaborative relationships with pharmaceutical firms. The aim is to gain faster industry feedback by participating directly in drug development, thereby refining products for pharmaceutical clients. Jonah Cool, head of life sciences partnerships at Anthropic, noted that while creating and selling AI tools for life sciences companies, the firm will maintain a focus on neglected disease research.

Released alongside the drug discovery project, Claude Science is an AI workbench built by Anthropic for researchers, not a new model. It operates on existing Claude models, integrates access to over 60 scientific databases, and provides specialized toolkits for fields like genomics, protein structure, and cheminformatics. The platform aims to consolidate research tasks such as literature review, data computation, and chart generation within a single environment. It is currently available in beta for Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise users on macOS and Linux systems.

Anthropic indicated it can prioritize patient benefit in project selection, including areas neglected by commercial markets. A company spokesperson revealed that the project is currently in its early stages, with future progress to be announced in due course.
