Hang Seng Biotech Index Shows Recovery from Mid-June, with Notable Increase in Share Buybacks

The Hang Seng Biotech Index reached its peak for the year on January 14, subsequently entering a correction phase. A significant decline began in May, which is believed to be primarily due to capital being diverted from non-AI sectors by the artificial intelligence investment frenzy, coupled with escalating geopolitical tensions.

From mid-June onwards, the index stabilized and then began a rebound, recovering over 17% from its June low. During this period, the intensity of share buybacks by constituent companies increased markedly, providing some support to the market.

As of July 3, the year-to-date decline for the Biotech Index has narrowed to 2%, outperforming the Hang Seng Composite Index, which represents the broader Hong Kong stock market and fell 11% over the same period.

Concurrently, Hong Kong-listed healthcare companies significantly ramped up their share repurchase activities during the market downturn. Over the past year, monthly buyback amounts for healthcare firms had remained relatively stable overall. However, as selling pressure intensified this May, repurchase activity accelerated noticeably.

In June, the total buyback amount for healthcare companies surged 86% month-over-month to HK$4.4 billion, exceeding the combined total of the previous five months.

The Hang Seng Biotech Index reflects the overall performance of the top 30 Hong Kong-listed biotech companies that are also eligible for the Southbound Stock Connect program. In a challenging broader market environment, buyback initiatives within this index have also risen significantly.

Data shows that the combined buyback amount for constituents of the Biotech Index skyrocketed 1,372% month-over-month in May, followed by a further 117% increase in June. The June buyback figure approached HK$3.6 billion, accounting for 81% of the total repurchases in the healthcare sector. This highlights the determination of index constituents to protect shareholder value.
