Deloitte Study Reveals UK Staff Quietly Using AI Behind Employers' Backs

A recent Deloitte survey has uncovered that nearly one in ten UK employees have utilised AI tools that their employers have either banned or would likely disapprove of, shedding light on the escalating friction between workers and management over the adoption of this technology. The research indicates that 63% of staff have engaged with AI tools in their professional roles, suggesting a widespread desire to leverage artificial intelligence for enhanced performance or to expedite tedious tasks.

Simultaneously, a significant 63% of the 25,000 respondents expressed concerns that management might perceive AI as a potential substitute for their roles. These findings paint a picture of a workforce eager to embrace AI, yet feeling constrained by employers who may restrict its use or potentially leverage its proliferation as a rationale for layoffs or wage suppression.

Paul Lee, who spearheaded the survey, noted that employees are simultaneously thinking, "this could boost my productivity, but it might also diminish my value." He explained that this duality is intensifying the "stigma" surrounding AI in the workplace. The statistics further corroborate that the unauthorised use of AI tools is becoming increasingly prevalent across professional environments.

Data security firm Cyberhaven, which monitors data transmission across hundreds of companies, discovered that one-third of employees utilise AI through personal accounts, with nearly 40% of AI interactions involving sensitive information. Adding to this trend, a Microsoft report from October last year cited that the rate of unauthorised AI tool usage has reached 71%.
