A recent survey conducted by Appian, released on June 10th, indicates that artificial intelligence adoption in the U.S. public sector is transitioning from experimental pilots to active deployment within government operations. The survey, which polled 2,000 U.S. public sector employees, found that more than one-third (37%) of respondents reported their organization's AI integration has reached an advanced stage, with AI embedded into multiple critical mission workflows. A further 32% of agencies are actively advancing their AI deployment efforts.

AI Pervades Core Government Functions

The survey data reveals that AI technology is being rapidly implemented across various U.S. government functions. Nearly half (47%) of respondents stated AI is being actively used for workforce planning and human resources operations; 45% of agencies have deployed AI for investigations, compliance, and case management. Widespread application is also seen in areas including procurement and contract management (44%), grant management (43%), cybersecurity and threat detection (42%), and citizen service delivery (41%).

Jason Adolf, Appian's Global Public Sector Vice President, noted that prior research by Harvard Business Review Analytic Services found organizations derive greater value when AI is integrated into workflows and operational systems. This latest public sector study shows government agencies are increasingly putting this principle into practice.

Governance and Oversight Emerge as Priorities

As AI adoption expands, public sector entities are heavily investing in necessary governance frameworks. Nearly half of the respondents cited data privacy and security (46%), regulatory compliance (45%), and human oversight and accountability (44%) as their top responsible AI priorities. Transparency and auditability are also major concerns, identified as key factors by 42% of respondents.

The survey also found agencies are actively aligning with government AI requirements. 40% of respondents said their agency is fully compliant with current government directives and actively reporting AI use cases, while a further 54% indicated alignment efforts are underway, with governance frameworks still being refined.

Operational Efficiency Remains Key Investment Focus

Looking ahead, agencies ranked improving operational efficiency in mission execution or citizen service (40%), automating complex workflows based on context and outcomes (38%), leveraging data-driven insights for better decision-making (37%), and ensuring compliance and reducing risk (35%) as the primary priorities for their AI strategies.

Appian provides an AI automation platform focused on automating complex processes within large enterprises and governments. The company has over 25 years of experience in the process automation field.
