UK Grid Operator Forecasts Sufficient Power Supply for Upcoming Winter

The UK's National Energy System Operator (NESO) stated in a preliminary report on seasonal supply-demand balance released Tuesday that the country will have adequate electricity supply this winter, despite disruptions to energy flows stemming from the conflict in Iran.

Peace negotiations are currently underway between the US and Iran with the aim of ending the conflict, which has disturbed energy shipments through the Strait of Hormuz. This strait typically accounts for approximately one-fifth of global liquefied natural gas supplies.

Deborah Peterson, Director of Whole Energy System Resilience at NESO, commented in a statement that the organization will continue monitoring global energy markets. However, households and businesses can be assured that electricity supply remains secure and dependable.

Roughly 30% of the UK's electricity relies on natural gas. Nonetheless, only about 1% of the country's gas supply originates from Qatar, which normally transports its gas via the Strait of Hormuz.

This winter, the UK is projected to be a net importer of electricity, with domestic power prices likely to remain higher than the European average.

NESO anticipates that the de-rated power capacity margin—a measure of surplus capacity above peak electricity demand—will reach 5.5 gigawatts (GW). This level aligns with margins seen in recent winters and equates to 8.8% of the forecasted peak demand during an average cold spell.
