Thai Exports Post Biggest Gain in Four Years, Driven by AI-Related Products

Thailand's exports have achieved their fastest growth in more than four years, lifted by electronics shipments fueled by the global artificial intelligence boom and a surge in Chinese demand for Thai durian and mangosteen.

Data released by Thailand's Ministry of Commerce on Friday showed that exports in August jumped 24.3% year on year, the highest growth rate in 56 months, up from 21.6% in July.

Imports rose 25.1% year on year, slowing from a 36.7% increase the previous month.

The trade deficit narrowed to US$2.5 billion from US$3.6 billion in July.

The export growth rate came in slightly below the median estimate of 24.8% in a survey of economists, while the import increase was also below the forecast of 30%. Economists had previously expected a trade deficit of US$3.6 billion.

The latest figures confirm the Ministry of Commerce's assessment that Thai exports are on track to reach a record high this year.

Electronics exports account for nearly one-third of total exports, and the category is expected to remain a core growth driver as global technology companies ramp up investment in AI infrastructure.

Alongside the export boom, foreign investment has also risen sharply. Last year, Thailand's investment incentive applications already hit a record high, and they are expected to surpass that level again in 2026.

Benefiting from a broad shift in global supply chains, Thailand's data center, electronics and other technology industries continue to expand production capacity.

The Ministry of Commerce expects exports to remain strong for the rest of the year, supported by demand for electronics and greater clarity on US tariff policy.
