Washington Talks: Trump Administration Meets With AI Firm Anthropic Over Safety Concerns

Senior officials from the Trump administration held a video conference on Tuesday with an executive from Anthropic PBC to address risks associated with artificial intelligence. Sources familiar with the matter indicate that Tom Brown, Anthropic's Chief Compute Officer, engaged in discussions with Emil Michael, the Pentagon's Chief Technology Officer, and U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick during the call.

Brown has recently emerged as Anthropic's primary representative in Washington circles. When approached for comment, Anthropic declined to respond, while the White House did not immediately reply to requests for clarification.

Tensions between Anthropic and the Trump administration have escalated once more in recent days. Over the weekend, Dario Amodei, the company's Chief Executive, published an extensive essay urging governmental oversight and advocating for a slowdown in the development of cutting-edge AI systems. Amodei's argument suggests researchers require more time to thoroughly examine potential dangers posed by the technology.

His position quickly drew support from Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, and Elon Musk, who heads SpaceXAI. However, the proposals were met with sharp criticism from President Donald Trump, who dismissed concerns regarding AI risks as "a scam" and voiced opposition to introducing new regulations.

Brown first gained prominence in Washington earlier this summer when he spearheaded critical negotiations with U.S. officials. Those talks, which ultimately proved successful, sought to lift export controls imposed on Anthropic's most sophisticated AI models. Earlier this month, he appeared alongside Lutnick at a technology-themed G20 summit, where he publicly commended Trump's efforts to bolster data center development across the country.
