The Chinese Ministry of Finance and the Macau SAR government issued a joint statement on August 10, announcing that the central government will issue RMB 6 billion in sovereign bonds in Macau on August 20.

The statement highlights that 2026 marks the inaugural year of China's 15th Five-Year Plan, and this issuance represents the fifth consecutive year the central government has offered RMB-denominated sovereign bonds in Macau. This move underscores the central government's strong support for Macau's appropriate economic diversification and the enhancement of its specialized financial sector's competitiveness.

This bond issuance features a more diversified maturity structure, which is beneficial for refining the regular issuance mechanism and providing investors with a broader range of safe and stable RMB investment options. It is expected to play a positive role in continuously improving Macau's bond market ecosystem and promoting connectivity between Macau, mainland China, and international markets.

The Macau SAR government expressed its welcome for the central government's renewed issuance of RMB sovereign bonds in the region. The continued issuance of these bonds in Macau is a significant demonstration of the central government's support for accelerating the development of Macau's bond market, promoting the quality growth of its specialized financial industry, and driving appropriate economic diversification. This will help attract more high-quality issuers and international investors to Macau's bond market, better leverage Macau's advantages and role in the nation's opening-up, and support Macau in more seamlessly integrating into and serving the national development strategy.
