Meta's AI agent application Muse surpassed 5 million downloads in just 22 days after launch, outpacing mainstream AI products such as ChatGPT and Claude, making it one of the fastest consumer AI products to break into the mainstream.
According to the latest data from market research firm Sensor Tower, Muse launched in the United States and Canada on September 8 and accumulated more than 5 million downloads by September 30. By comparison, OpenAI's ChatGPT took 56 days to reach the same milestone, SpaceX's Grok took 103 days, and Anthropic's Claude took 492 days. Muse's explosive growth has made the market take notice of Meta's ability to execute in the consumer AI space.
Muse currently remains at the top of both the Apple App Store and Google Play Store rankings, a result that further strengthened market confidence in Meta's ability to deliver on its AI strategy and intensified competition in the AI agent sector.
Consumer AI Agent Muse Breaks Growth Records
Muse's core differentiation lies in its product design aimed at ordinary consumers. Previously, the main user base of AI agent platforms was concentrated among technology developers and enterprise users, but Muse significantly lowered the barrier to entry for ordinary users through customizable anthropomorphic avatars and a simple, easy-to-use interface.
It is worth noting that Muse is not the fastest app in history to surpass 5 million downloads. Sensor Tower pointed out that Disney+, HBO Max, Threads, Candy Crush, Pokémon Go, and Fortnite all achieved higher download volumes within the same time window. However, in the AI agent niche, Muse's growth rate is still of landmark significance.
In addition, when ChatGPT launched in November 2022, it was the first mainstream generative AI chatbot aimed at the general public, and at that time the market was still in the early stage of understanding such products, which partly explains its relatively slower early growth pace.
Meta's Heavy Advertising Investment Strongly Drives Downloads
Muse's rapid growth did not rely entirely on organic traffic; Meta's large-scale marketing investment also played an indispensable role.
According to Sensor Tower data, during the two weeks from September 14 to September 27, Muse received 50% of Meta's internal advertising resources in the form of "daily house impressions" and ranked among the "top 15 brands by U.S. ad impressions."
Muse is currently available for free download and use. Meta said it will take a small commission in the future from transactions facilitated through the agent, thereby building a path to commercial monetization.
Competition Heats Up in the AI Agent Sector as OpenAI Follows Close Behind
Muse's popularity reflects the full-scale acceleration of tech giants in the AI agent field. Just one day before Muse's data was released, OpenAI also launched its own AI agent platform, also equipped with customizable cartoon-style avatars, under the product name Dots.
Dots is currently mainly aimed at the enterprise market. OpenAI Chief Financial Officer Sarah Friar said the company will also open the platform to consumers in the future.
The two major AI giants' successive moves in the agent sector indicate that competition in this market will further intensify, and whoever can first establish a scale advantage on the consumer side may become a key variable in the next stage of AI commercialization competition.
