India's Digital Payments Pioneer Paytm Pivots to Workplace AI Agents for Its Next Growth Phase

India's digital payments trailblazer Paytm is venturing into a fresh business arena to reignite revenue growth, according to people familiar with the matter, as it prepares to market AI agents to corporate clients. The strategic push bets on rising demand for services that can independently handle various workloads and tasks with minimal oversight, marking a notable departure from its traditional focus on processing payments and offering loans and investments for consumers and businesses.

The new offering, branded Paytm Intelligence (Pi), will deploy these AI agents across functions such as sales, customer service, and operations. Initially, Pi will target banks, small lenders, insurers, and other financial institutions in India and the United Arab Emirates, the sources indicated. At its core, Pi is built on a financial-services AI model that Paytm has been developing for roughly two years, leveraging vast numerical datasets accumulated from years of processing transactions and analyzing customer behavior to predict fraud, assess creditworthiness, and gauge the credibility of claims.

Paytm has already rolled out Pi to a select group of clients and plans to extend access to a wider customer base shortly. The company has stated its intention to aggressively integrate AI across its operations, including plans to hire approximately 4,000 people by early next year as part of efforts to expand its merchant network and AI-driven product portfolio. India's pioneering fintech firms are maturing, shifting from an era of rapid customer and transaction growth toward monetizing their technology and data in innovative ways, particularly as the payments segment faces pressure to build higher-margin revenue streams amid intense competition that keeps returns on basic services thin.

Founded by Vijay Shekhar Sharma in 2010, Paytm started with mobile prepaid recharge services but quickly pivoted to digital payments and banking. The demonetization policy in late 2016 cemented its leadership in India's fintech landscape. Today, it competes with rivals such as Walmart's PhonePe and Google Pay, and its shares have more than doubled over the past two years following cost-cutting measures and sustained profitability, overcoming regulatory hurdles that once threatened its business model and emboldening its pivot to becoming an AI service provider.

While Paytm's revenue has recovered and turned profitable, fierce competition in digital payments limits its growth potential in that arena. Meanwhile, global digital payment firms are increasingly embracing AI, as evidenced by Stripe's recent agreement to acquire OpenRouter and Klarna's AI partnerships with Google and OpenAI. For Paytm, Pi represents its first major business transformation, combining payments intelligence, behavioral models, voice technology, and workflow automation. The AI agents can assess customer needs, run marketing campaigns, attract new clients, and cross-sell to existing ones, according to insiders.

Analyst Diksha Gera notes that AI adoption will create clear performance divergence among fintech players. Leaders will leverage proprietary data and model feedback loops to strengthen their advantages, while laggards face margin pressure as AI-native competitors redefine industry benchmarks for speed, accuracy, and personalization. The bigger breakthroughs, Gera adds, will emerge from embedded models and automation that cut service costs and spawn new AI-driven businesses, such as the agentic commerce market projected to reach $1.7 trillion by 2030.
