CBCX: Why Gold Prices Stabilized After Initial Jobless Claims Fell

On October 9, U.S. employment data once again presented a mixed picture.

CBCX noted that, according to a report released on October 8, initial jobless claims for the week ending October 3 came in at 197,000, below the expected 200,000 and slightly lower than the previous week's revised 199,000.

Following the data release, spot gold fluctuated around $4,122 per ounce, still managing a modest intraday gain at the time.

Fewer layoffs do not directly translate into strong hiring.

CBCX believes that the four-week average of initial claims fell to 198,000, which helps smooth out single-week fluctuations; however, continuing claims rose to 1.716 million, above market expectations, indicating that some job seekers still need time to find new employment.

Put together, the two sets of indicators reflect a labor market characterized more by slow worker turnover.

Gold's muted reaction to this reflects that traders need to weigh both employment resilience and slowing growth.

Low initial claims weaken the case for rapid near-term easing, while rising continuing claims limit overly optimistic assessments.

The gap between the data and expectations is also not particularly significant, so this single release alone cannot be used to conclude that the rate path has changed, and it is even less appropriate to attribute the intraday gain to a single number.

Different statistics also correspond to different reference weeks, and this distinction in measurement should be preserved when interpreting the data.

The key focus going forward is whether this divergence can persist.

CBCX analyzes that if continuing claims continue to climb while hiring improvement remains limited, gold's growth expectations may shift; if initial claims stay low and inflation remains sticky, the cost pressure of holding a non-yielding asset persists.

Employment trends over consecutive weeks and changes in real interest rates offer more explanatory power than short-lived fluctuations after a single data release.
