UK Air Traffic Control Disruption Causes Widespread Flight Chaos, Affecting Over 80 Cancellations at Heathrow

The UK experienced severe air travel disturbances for several hours on Tuesday due to a malfunction in its air traffic control system. London's Heathrow Airport, the nation's largest aviation hub, stated in an announcement that the failure originating from NATS affected only departing flights.

Other London airports, including Gatwick, Luton, and Stansted, along with facilities in Birmingham, Manchester, and Edinburgh, also reported flight delays or cancellations. NATS, the public-private entity responsible for UK air traffic control, reported the technical issue shortly after 1 p.m. local time, attributing the problem to its flight processing system, which continuously updates flight plans and operational data for aircraft within UK airspace.

By approximately 4:45 p.m., NATS indicated progress in resolving the fault. "We have implemented repair measures, and the flight systems are beginning to recover," the company said in a statement. "We are continuing to work closely with airline and airport clients to restore normal operations." FlightAware data reveals that, so far, more than 80 flights have been cancelled and roughly 200 have been delayed at Heathrow alone.

As a result of the disruption, a Virgin Atlantic flight from Delhi to Heathrow was forced to divert to Stansted for refuelling. Ryanair reported that over 50 flights have been cancelled and more than 65,000 passengers have faced delays due to the system outage. Technical failures have become a recurring issue in the UK, including an incident last summer linked to an unspecified radar-related problem. Three years prior, another NATS system failure brought UK air traffic to a standstill, leaving aircraft, crew members, and passengers stranded.
