Severe El Nino Event Could Spark a New Wave of Food Inflation

Multiple international financial institutions have issued warnings that a convergence of risks could trigger a fresh round of food inflation. Forecasts suggest this year may witness the most powerful super El Nino event on record, with its effects potentially persisting through 2027.

Recently, global financial heavyweights including Goldman Sachs, HSBC, Bank of America, and JPMorgan have all raised red flags, cautioning that overlapping risk factors could ignite a new cycle of rising food prices. The capital markets have responded swiftly, with the planting and agriculture sector on China's A-share market surging dramatically, as multiple stocks such as Agri-Tech Seed Co., Ltd. (600313.SH) hit their daily trading limits and agricultural ETFs climbed across the board.

The sea surface temperature in the equatorial central and eastern Pacific continues to climb, indicating a strong El Nino event is developing rapidly. Monitoring by China's National Climate Center reveals that this oceanic region reached El Nino status thresholds back in May. According to sea temperature projections, readings in this zone are expected to rise further, peaking around November or December this year, potentially culminating in the strongest super El Nino event ever recorded, with impacts lasting until 2027.

El Nino disrupts atmospheric circulation, leading to alternating episodes of extreme heat, drought, torrential rain, and typhoons, thereby significantly amplifying uncertainty in agricultural production. At the national level, there is a push for the coordinated advancement of superior seed varieties, improved land conditions, refined cultivation methods, and advanced technologies. Scientific field management can substantially mitigate the adverse effects of natural disasters—for instance, employing chemical growth regulators to reduce plant height and enhance lodging resistance.

This situation also compels seed companies to expand beyond merely developing and selling seeds, requiring them to educate growers on supporting cultivation and management practices to bolster resilience against natural calamities.
