China's Power Battery Sector Output Jumps 62.9% Year-on-Year in July, Reaching 218.0 GWh

Data released by the China Automotive Power Battery Industry Innovation Alliance shows that combined production of power and energy storage batteries in the country reached 218.0 GWh in July, marking a 5.8% increase month-on-month and a substantial 62.9% rise compared to the same period last year. For the first seven months of the year, cumulative output totaled 1,286.9 GWh, reflecting a year-on-year growth of 54.9%.

In terms of sales, the sector moved 185.2 GWh of power and storage batteries in July, a slight 5.5% dip from the prior month but a robust 45.5% jump year-on-year. Power batteries accounted for the lion's share at 129.1 GWh, representing 69.7% of total sales, with a 3.3% sequential decline and a 41.6% annual increase. Storage batteries contributed 56.1 GWh, or 30.3% of the total, down 10.3% month-on-month but up 55.4% year-on-year. Over the January-to-July period, cumulative sales hit 1,164.6 GWh, a 48.1% increase year-on-year. Within that total, power battery sales reached 790.4 GWh (67.9% of the mix, up 37.1% annually), while storage battery sales stood at 374.2 GWh (32.1% of the mix, surging 78.6% year-on-year).

Exports of power and storage batteries combined amounted to 35.2 GWh in July, down 2.7% from June but up 51.7% year-on-year, representing 19.0% of the month's total sales. Power battery exports totaled 24.0 GWh, making up 68.0% of all exports, with a 6.0% monthly drop and a 62.1% annual gain. Storage battery exports came to 11.3 GWh, or 32.0% of the export mix, rising 4.9% month-on-month and 33.4% year-on-year. For the first seven months, cumulative exports reached 216.6 GWh, a 43.9% increase year-on-year, accounting for 18.6% of total sales. Of that, power batteries exported 146.7 GWh (67.7% of exports, up 52.1% annually), and storage batteries exported 69.9 GWh (32.3% of exports, up 29.3% year-on-year).

Turning to installations, domestic power battery installations hit 74.6 GWh in July, a 2.5% decline month-on-month but a 33.5% surge year-on-year. Ternary battery installations totaled 11.1 GWh, accounting for 14.9% of the total, down 12.1% from June and up just 1.8% annually. Lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery installations reached 63.1 GWh, representing 84.6% of the total, with a 1.0% sequential decline and a 40.5% year-on-year increase. Cumulatively, installations from January through July reached 410.2 GWh, up 15.4% year-on-year. Of that, ternary batteries accounted for 74.5 GWh (18.2% of the total, up 12.1% annually), while LFP batteries contributed 335.1 GWh (81.7% of the total, up 16.0% year-on-year).
