On Monday, Alibaba (BABA.US) opened lower and touched a near 2% intraday drop, but by the time of writing, the decline had narrowed to 0.23%. The move comes as the company's core leadership stepped in to buy shares following a major capital-raising announcement.

On August 24, Hong Kong-listed Alibaba-W (09988) closed down 8.54% after the company unveiled a HK$80 billion new share placement. Proceeds from the offering are set to be fully directed toward full-stack AI capabilities and AI infrastructure buildout. The placement drew strong interest from long-term investors, including global sovereign wealth funds, ultimately achieving nearly three times oversubscription.

Following the HK$80 billion placement announcement, Alibaba Group Chairman Joe Tsai and CEO Eddie Wu purchased a combined approximately HK$120 million worth of Alibaba shares, signaling confidence in the company's AI strategy. Market observers noted that management's personal share purchases on the day after the placement was announced reflect a strong belief in the firm's AI roadmap.
