Shares of Old Dominion Freight Lines (ODFL) plummeted 5.08% during intraday trading on Wednesday, despite the company reporting second-quarter earnings and revenue that surpassed analyst expectations.

The less-than-truckload carrier posted a profit of $350.6 million, or $1.68 per share, for the quarter ended June 30, compared with $268.6 million, or $1.27 per share, a year earlier. Revenue rose 10% to $1.55 billion. Both figures came in ahead of consensus estimates, with analysts forecasting earnings of $1.51 per share on revenue of $1.53 billion. However, the company’s top-line growth was driven entirely by higher pricing, as shipments per day declined 5.7% from the prior-year period.

The contraction in freight volumes raised concerns about softening demand and the sustainability of revenue growth, prompting investors to overlook the headline beat. The stock had already rallied 44.3% year-to-date, leaving it vulnerable to any signs of weakness in core operating metrics despite improved profitability.
