ECB Staff Seek Clarity on Lagarde's Potential Early Departure

The European Central Bank's staff council has formally requested that management clarify whether President Christine Lagarde intends to step down before her term concludes, warning that prolonged uncertainty could undermine trust in the institution. In a letter addressed to the ECB's Executive Board, staff representatives cautioned that this instability could "affect market confidence in the ECB's policy communication, spark concerns among employees and stakeholders, and hinder orderly leadership succession and strategic priority planning."

This intervention highlights growing friction between the workforce and ECB leadership over internal governance matters. Lagarde has publicly stated she will serve until 2027 but has never committed to completing the full eight-year mandate, which expires in October 2027. Last week, she told reporters there was "nothing to announce" regarding her future plans.

An ECB spokesperson responded that the institution "has mature institutional governance mechanisms and deep professional expertise to ensure a smooth transition, as demonstrated by previous leadership changes." Both Lagarde and the World Economic Forum declined to comment through their respective spokespeople.

The staff council cited the ECB's 2025 employee survey, which found that only 40% of respondents felt they could freely express their views without fear of adverse consequences. The letter further emphasized that incoming Executive Board members would require adequate time to familiarize themselves with the bank's internal operations and complexities.
