Recent reports indicate that ByteDance has recruited a former senior executive from Coatue Management to lead its corporate investment team. The social media giant is accelerating its investment initiatives to support its rapidly expanding artificial intelligence strategy.

According to sources familiar with the matter, Jiang Kai has joined ByteDance as the head of its financial investment division based in Hong Kong, reporting directly to Chief Financial Officer Julie Gao. Insiders suggest this appointment is aimed at helping ByteDance establish a more systematic framework for investing in emerging technology startups.

Jiang Kai is a well-known figure in China's venture capital and private equity circles. Public records show that Jiang graduated from Peking University in 2010 and began his career as an analyst at Morgan Stanley. He joined Providence Equity Partners in 2012 before moving to Coatue Management in 2015, where he focused on technology and consumer investments in Asia from Hong Kong. Two years after joining Coatue, Jiang was promoted to head of the firm's China operations in 2017, and subsequently elevated to partner in 2020.

In 2017, Coatue established a capital partnership with ByteDance and made its initial investment in the company. Since then, Coatue has participated in multiple subsequent funding rounds, at one point holding a stake in ByteDance valued at billions of dollars. Coatue founder Philippe Laffont also previously served on ByteDance's board of directors.
