Intel Issues $15 Billion in Common Stock at Peak Prices, Stock Price Plummets

Deep News

Intel has announced the issuance of $15 billion in common stock, causing its pre-market share price to drop over 3% following the news. This financing marks one of the largest capital market operations in the company's business advancement, targeting the artificial intelligence infrastructure investment boom to accelerate growth.

According to a report, Intel stated in a Monday announcement that the proceeds will be used for general corporate purposes. The company framed this financing as a response to "overseas investments in the AI computing field," highlighting significant opportunities in emerging areas such as artificial intelligence, specialized chips, advanced packaging, and external foundry services.

The stock price faces pressure from market concerns about equity dilution, but the current market environment for this financing differs significantly from previous lows. Intel shares have surged nearly twofold this year, providing a window for financing at relatively high levels.

Stock Price Nearly Doubled, Timing Favors Financing

Intel shares were trading at $101.65 before the announcement, with year-to-date gains nearly doubling, largely driven by the AI data center construction boom boosting demand for its traditional processors. Despite Nvidia's dominance in the AI chip market, Intel has benefited from data center expansion through CPU sales. Last quarter, Intel's data center business revenue surged 59% year-over-year, more than double the overall company's revenue growth, acting as a key driver of positive market sentiment. The significant stock price recovery has provided a favorable pricing basis for this equity financing.

Foundry Business Transformation Remains a Key Variable

Despite strong data center metrics, the sustainability of Intel's transformation plan remains uncertain, particularly regarding its foundry business progress. The company is seeking to revise its business model with external foundry services as a core component, but it has yet to secure significant external clients, a persistent risk for investors. In the financing statement, Intel listed advanced packaging and external foundry as key investment areas, indicating the company's intent to allocate some proceeds to expand its foundry operations. Whether Intel can convert its data center momentum into breakthroughs in foundry client acquisition will be a critical test of this financing's success.
