This Week's Fed Events According to ATFX

Deep News
08/17

This week, the Federal Reserve's planned activities are the primary focus for traders, with the most significant event being the release of the minutes from the July Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting. While many reports examine a broad range of economic data, the core calendar of significant events revolves almost exclusively around the Fed.

On Monday, three routine items are published. The first is commercial paper (CP) rates, which the Fed reports almost every business day. These rates are crucial for ensuring the liquidity of major U.S. financial and non-financial institutions. According to the latest report, the Fed held approximately $1.4084 trillion in commercial paper as of the end of July. The second item is foreign exchange rates, which the Fed publishes daily. The third is selected interest rates, which include key U.S. rates like the federal funds rate, commercial paper rates, bank rates, and Treasury yields.

Tuesday's data release overlaps with Monday's routine reports on commercial paper and selected interest rates. The unique release for Tuesday is Industrial Production and Capacity Utilization, a monthly report that provides insight into the U.S. manufacturing sector. This data point typically receives less attention from the market.

Wednesday is the most significant day of the week. Alongside the routine releases of commercial paper and selected interest rates, the Fed will publish the FOMC minutes from the late July meeting. At that meeting, the committee decided to hold the benchmark interest rate steady at 3.5% to 3.75%. The release of these minutes could reignite market speculation about the timing of future rate cuts, potentially weakening the U.S. dollar and strengthening gold and non-U.S. currencies.

Thursday's routine includes the standard daily data. The additional weekly release is Factors Affecting Reserve Balances, which details the changes in commercial bank reserves held at the Fed and the composition of the Fed's balance sheet. This data generally only attracts attention during unexpected shifts.

Friday's unique release is the Assets and Liabilities of Commercial Banks in the U.S., a weekly report. This data provides a detailed breakdown of the assets and liabilities of U.S. commercial banks. Like the reserve balance report, its importance is low during routine weeks but can become significant with a surprise change.
