08/18

On August 18, iShares MSCI South Korea ETF declined 5.25% in regular trading, trading at $175.205/share, with turnover of $886 million.

On the news front, Korean equities ended a five-session winning streak as surging bond yields soured market sentiment. The benchmark 10-year Korean Treasury yield jumped 9.5 basis points to 4.395%, while the 3-year yield rose 8.5 basis points to 3.854%. Meanwhile, KOSPI daily average turnover in August fell to 25.7 trillion won, the lowest level this year, sharply contracting from over 50 trillion won during the May-June rally.

The pullback followed a rapid recovery in which KOSPI surged more than 20% from its July low to enter a technical bull market, amplifying short-term profit-taking pressure. Samsung Electronics reversed an early 4.9% gain to close down 2.19%, while SK Hynix pared an intraday 8.9% advance to finish up just 1.03%.

The fund generally invests at least 80% of its assets in the component securities of its underlying index, which is a free float-adjusted market capitalization-weighted index designed to measure the performance of the large- and mid-capitalization segments of the Korean equity market.
