SIA in Talks to Acquire Over 50 Long-Range Wide-Body Aircraft

According to industry sources on the 4th, SIA is currently engaged in preliminary discussions with European manufacturer Airbus and American manufacturer Boeing regarding a potential order for a minimum of 50 large, long-range wide-body jets. This move is strategically aimed at supporting the carrier's growth trajectory and fleet modernization for the coming decade.

The reported procurement is focused on the industry's largest long-haul workhorse models. This includes Boeing's approximately 400-seat 777X series and Airbus's slightly smaller A350-1000 aircraft. The negotiations are understood to be in their early stages, but a final agreement could potentially include options for dozens of additional aircraft.

As a major global purchaser of long-range wide-body aircraft, SIA's fleet planning decisions are closely watched and often set a trend for the wider aviation industry. While high international fuel prices have prompted some competitors to scale back operations, SIA affirmed last month its commitment to a steady expansion of capacity. The airline is also a long-standing operator of the Boeing 777 series and was an early customer for the upgraded 777X model, which is currently facing delivery delays.
