The second unit at the China General Nuclear Power Corporation (CGN) Guangdong Taipingling nuclear power project has achieved its first successful grid connection.

This milestone occurred at 9:16 AM today, with the unit generating its first electricity. This event marks a crucial step towards commercial operation for the second reactor at the first Hualong One nuclear power base within the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.

Construction on Unit 2 of the Taipingling project commenced on October 15, 2020. Following the grid connection, on-site confirmation verified the unit is operating in good condition, with all technical parameters meeting design expectations.

The next phase involves a planned series of tests to further validate the unit's performance. It is projected to formally commence commercial power generation in the second half of 2026.

Based on calculations using the projected average utilization hours for domestic nuclear power in 2025, once Unit 2 enters full commercial operation, its estimated annual electricity output will exceed 9 billion kilowatt-hours. This output is sufficient to meet the annual production and residential electricity needs of nearly one million people.

Furthermore, the unit's operation is expected to contribute to an annual reduction in carbon dioxide emissions equivalent to over 8.3 million tons.
