Hong Kong's largest airline group has seen its overall operational capacity climb past pre-pandemic levels over the last three years, according to Chief Executive Officer Ronald Lam, who outlined ambitions to expand the global destination network to 150 points within the coming decade.

In an exclusive discussion, Lam emphasised that high-speed rail services cannot fully substitute for air travel, describing the relationship as complementary rather than a "zero-sum game" between the two transport modes.

The carrier currently operates flights to more than 20 destinations between Hong Kong and mainland China, with Lam expressing hopes to continue increasing both flight frequencies and new routes in the future.

Addressing perceptions that ticket prices remain on the higher side, Lam responded that fares are determined by factors including network coverage, product quality, and service standards, adding that the company strives to deliver value for money. Citing load factors exceeding 80%, he noted that a significant number of passengers deliberately choose to fly with CATHAY PAC AIR.

For travellers seeking more budget-friendly options, Lam suggested considering the group's low-cost subsidiary Hong Kong Express.

On future development plans, Lam revealed that the group will enhance both cabin and ground offerings while refurbishing its short-haul aircraft fleet.

The company also intends to open its maiden Cathay Pacific lounge at a New York airport later this year, followed by a new lounge facility at Tokyo's Narita Airport in early next year.
