MPF Members Projected to Gain HK$6,258 Per Capita in August as RMB Bonds Deliver Record Performance

According to data released on August 26, the MPF research firm has published its latest projections on Mandatory Provident Fund (MPF) earnings and RMB bond returns for the month of August. As of August 21, MPF investments recorded growth of approximately 1.85%, bringing the year-to-date return to 8.21%.

The firm estimates that the MPF system will see monthly investment gains of HK$31.1 billion, driving cumulative year-to-date earnings to HK$128.7 billion. This translates to an average monthly gain of HK$6,258 per member and a year-to-date gain of HK$26,561 per member.

At the asset class level, Asian equities have led the year-to-date performance with gains exceeding 26%. Meanwhile, RMB bonds have achieved the best year-to-date return since the inception of the MPF system, climbing 5.47%.

The chairman of the research firm noted that policy volatility—from tariff decisions to Middle East policies, trade measures, and economic proposals—is generating a level of uncertainty that financial markets typically view unfavorably. This underscores the importance of maintaining investment positions and, in particular, maintaining diversified portfolios.

He further commented that while US Treasury yields have risen to multi-decade highs, the mainland Chinese bond market has staged a strong rebound. This divergence stems partly from deflationary pressures in mainland China, contrasting with inflationary concerns elsewhere globally. Such differences illustrate how the Chinese market can follow independent trends, offering MPF members valuable diversification benefits.
